The MSE is one of the country's few Western classical ensembles and has acquired acclaim for its rapid growth. Under the sterling leadership of Clement Vedanayagam since 2012, guided by principles of excellence in performance and organization in an environment of trust, honor and exchange, from a few senior musicians, the MSE has exhibited a steep growth curve and now has a healthy mix of senior experienced musicians, young working professionals, and school and college students. It takes pride that it has partnered with conductor Augustine Paul and the Madras Musical Association, performing diverse works spanning baroque to contemporary music, and also has ties with international schools involving joint concerts.

Mirroring Chennai's cosmopolitan landscape, the musicians of the MSE have come from all parts of the state and country, united in the common aim of trying to make exceptional music here.
